KEEVAN Cycling Club’s sense of community spirit and commitment to fitness in a fun environment resulted in growth during the debut season from nine original members to almost 60.

The cross-community organisation may be based in Derrykeevan but attracts cyclists from not only the immediate surrounding areas but can point to a membership base covering Portadown, Dungannon and Lurgan.

Charitable support for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund For Children and Daisy Hill Hospital’s Renal Unit proved at the core of the club’s first-year fund-raising efforts.

“We are really delighted to have been able to raise such a significant amount of money for two great local causes,” said Keevan’s Gary Heenan. “Both of these projects are well-respected and close to the hearts of the members of our club, so to be able to support them in this way was fantastic.”

Community backing has resulted in financial assistance from firms with connections to the region such as Wright’s SPAR Derrykeevan, Industry Training Services, Warmflow, JP Corry, Diamond Belfast Architects, Ashgrove Cycles, M&W Farm Meats, McAdam Contracts Ltd, Whittle’s Car Services and Bryan Hynds Garden Machinery, Sales and Services.

“It is hoped that the club’s growth will help to bring the community together and benefit health and well-being,” said David Moore, Keevan’s assistant treasurer and a founder member. “We look forward to a bright future with the inclusion of youth members and those interested in road racing and tri-cross.

“We have worked well with other established cycling clubs in the area and combined at events such as the Lap Of The Lough to raise over £2,500.

“We have been delighted with the rapid growth enjoyed since our formation in February 2012 but welcome members of all experience and ability levels.

“We host morning runs each Saturday and Sunday, plus evening outings from April to September across Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“Our starting point is the Wright’s SPAR store in Derrykeevan and anyone interested in finding out more can leave details at the shop.”
