Plenty of pre-season positives from Lurgan win

BOWLS PORTADOWN produced an encouraging performance on Saturday to finish with the pre-season plaudits over Lurgan.

The 76-55 scoreline arrived thanks to wins across each rink by Portadown – although two had to be settled on the last end.

Martin Trainor’s quartet proved decisive courtesy of a 30-10 lead entering the final three ends.

George Richardson, Paul Moffett, Maurice Whitla and Aidan Corrigan were 6-1 up at five ends and a five-shot lead remained the situation by 12.

Lurgan responded up to the 16th end to close it to 12-11 before a strong finish left Portadown clear by 17-11.

Chris Duff, Robert Hobson, Dane Jordan and Martin Trainor combined superbly as Portadown restricted the Lurgan scoring to just two from ends four to 14.

Portadown’s tally of 29-4 across the same period was reduced by Lurgan’s 17 late on but the town players hit 30 by the close of play.

Gregory McCartan, Stephen McCall, Derek McCallion and Richard McMullan gained the reward for a determined display.

Portadown won the opening two ends and had scored 17 up to the 10th. However, Lurgan enjoyed scores of four, three and one to keep it level.

A Lurgan four provided the home side with a cushion approaching the closing ends but Portadown proved commanding to come out on top by 15-14.

Andrew Millar, Errol Whitten, Derek Wright and Mark Sproule scored three on the ninth to move 7-6 up ahead of the loss of five on the next end.

The Lurgan skip turned counts against his rink into shots for Lurgan on four ends but was matched by Sproule.

It was 13 apiece on the final end when Derek Wright moved the jack away from a Lurgan shot bowl, the home skip drew the shot only to see Sproule take it out for a 14-13 Portadown win.

Tomorrow (Saturday) in NIBA Division One, Portadown play host to Banbridge. The B players meet St Stephen’s.
