GLENN Cairns recorded a personal best on his way to gold at the Indoor Athletic Juvenile Championships for Ulster and Northern Ireland titles.

The 16-year-old member of Orchard County Athletics Club picked up first place in the 200 metres following victory across the heats and main event.

Cairns clocked up 23:86 in lane three to seal the heat success.

He managed to complete the job in the main event and return home with a medal.

“It was Glenn’s biggest event so far but he held his nerves and got off to a good start in the final,” said Bob McGaffin, the club coach. “He accelerated away in the heats and powered home for a delightful win.

“He was placed in the outside lane for the final and without anyone in front to set the pace.

“So the strategy was to make a strong start and hit maximum speed coming out of the top bend.

“It worked well so the second 100 metres proved a race to the finish line.

“The final didn’t go according to plan overall as the officials asked for a restart.

“This proved a fresh experience for Glenn but he remained composed and managed to drive home in a personal best of 23:76.”

Other Orchard County athletes on show were Mathew Harbinson (under 15s’ 800 metres) and Danielle Richardson (under 16s’ 1500 metres).

Emma Willis and Kyle Magwood - also from the area - were representing Upper Bann Athletics Club.

Willis was third in the under 19s’ 200-metres final.

Magwood worked hard across three events in the under 14s’ age class - the 800 metres, high jump and long jump.

The Orchard County roster is open to children aged over 12 years old. For further information contact McGaffin on (028) 38 333814.
