Widespread borough backing for the inaugural European sport celebration

Clubs in the region have offered support to the forthcoming European Week Of Sport by planning a number of events including football, new-age kurling and squash.

The inaugural European Week of Sport will run across September 7-13 in a bid to encourage more people to embrace an active lifestyle.

The celebrations look set to include events in Craigavon Leisure Centre, Loughgall Country Park, Ashgrove Community Centre and Lurgan Town Arena as part of efforts to back the event in the area.

The full schedule is as follows:

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 - KickBack football (Lurgan Town Arena, 1-2.30, contact Alex Clifford 07871001037); THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 - new-aged kurling (Craigavon Leisure Centre, 1.30-3.30, contact Roisin O’Hagan 02838311687); FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 - multi-sports youth fun day (Ashgrove Community Centre, 4-6 o’clock, contact David Mayers 02838331650); SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 - squash taster sessions (Craigavon Leisure Centre, 10-12 o’clock, contact Nick Rusk 07842724173); SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 - outdoor leisure (Loughgall Country Park, 1-4 o’clock, contact Alex Clifford 07871001037).

Alex Clifford - one of the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council community sports development officers - has confirmed four focus days designed to encourage clubs to get on board.

The council focus days will operate under a theme of education (Wednesday, September 9), workplace (Thursday, September 10), sport and fitness (Saturday, September 12) and outdoor (Sunday, September 13).

The MUGA sports programme is also set to launch on Monday across Portadown, Craigavon and Lurgan - with free drop-in sessions open to everyone.

The seven-week sessions open on Monday afternoon and include tri-golf, mini-games, hurling, camogie, gaelic football and football across Killicomaine, Scotch Street, Churchill, Taghnevan, North Lurgan, Ardowen, Mourneview, Donacloney, Clonmeen and Parkmore.
