Evergreen Club visit WW1 Battle Fields

This was an intergenerational, interdenominational study visit. Participants ranged in age from 8 years to 88 years old.

Places on the Itinerary for day one included Tyne Cot Military Cemetery, Island of Ireland Peace Park, (Messines), Ypres and the Menin Gate Memorial for the Last Post ceremony.

On day two visits were made to Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, Connaught Cemetery where the group laid a wreath, the Ulster Tower memorial to the 36th (Ulster) Division, and a visit to Newfoundland Memorial Park to see preserved trench lines.

On day three a visit was made to Devonshire Cemetery, the German Military Cemetery at Fricourt, Delville Wood for the South African Memorial and Museum and a visit to the 16th Irish Division Memorial/Church in Guillemont where everyone joined together in singing the words of ‘How Great Thou Art. A visit was made to Authuille Military Cemetry where we sang the ‘Green Fields of France.’ The final visit was to the Tank Corps Memorial at Pozieres and the Australian Windmill Site.

The trip was enhanced by having a very knowledgeable tour guide .
