Mr Irwin said the progress was “reassuring” and he hoped it would considerably speed up NI’s return to a level of normality.

He said: “The pace of the Covid19 vaccination service is heartening, reassuring and encouraging, especially after the very difficult year that we have endured with infections and tragic deaths associated with this pandemic.”

He added, “The lockdown measures have been a real feat of endurance for many individuals, families and indeed local businesses. It has also been a very difficult and pressured time for those in the health service who have been at the sharp end of this ordeal and who have been working round the clock to save lives and help people to recover from this disease. I hold them all in the highest regard.”

Mr Irwin said, “The fact that the vaccination programme is working well and is working through the most vulnerable categories of people, from older age brackets to those who are clinically vulnerable, is important in terms of allowing restrictions to be eased.”

He continued, “It is vital as the number of people being vaccinated increases, that we have dates added to the road map out of lockdown from the Executive and that we can see a fuller return to normality in the areas of schools and businesses. I look forward to further progress in this regard and publicly thank the many vaccination staff that are working quickly and efficiently in the fight against Covid19.”
