Martello Tower to re-open due to popular demand

Musketry and tales of combat await visitors to Northern Ireland’s only Martello tower at Magilligan Point in Limavady.

The tower is to be re-opened in August and September due to its popularity with visitors during its recent 200th birthday weekend.

Visitors to this magnificent military defence tower will be able to enjoy talks and tours of what life was like for soldiers based in Napoleonic times. Of particular interest will be the ongoing demonstrations of period equipment and musketry and tales of combat surrounding these magnificent coastal defences.

Visitors will be able to investigate the magazine rooms and take in the breathtaking views of Lough Foyle and the sister fort on the opposite side in Donegal.

Rhonda Robinson from the NIEA said: “This is a great opportunity for those people who missed out when it was last opened and for those who want to return with their friends to explore and admire what is a remarkable piece of 18th century coastal architecture.

“During European Heritage Open Days weekend, September 8th and 9th, there will be special displays by Irish Arms from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday 8th and from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday 9th. You will be able to meet the soldiers of bygone days, dressed in period costume showing enactments of cannon and musket firing.”

The Tower will be open from 1pm to 5pm on 11th, 12th, 25th and 26th August as well as the 8th & 9th September.
