Wrap up in your winter woollies and work off those excess Christmas pounds at Lough Neagh Discovery Centre’s renowned ‘Woodland Workout’ this New Year.
Meeting in the foyer of the centre, local residents can take part in this annual ‘workout’ which involves trimming back the hazel trees and the different varieties of willow found at the Craigavon Borough Council run Oxford Island each Saturday morning (10, 17, 24 and 31) throughout January from 11am to 1pm.
This innovative trimming technique is called ‘Coppicing’ and far from harming the tree, is an age old technique which revitalises and improves the health of the tree. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the many trees which reside at Oxford Island and interesting folklore about the different species of trees.
As the weather may be wet, appropriate waterproof clothing and footwear are required. As equipment is limited it would be greatly appreciated if the keen gardeners wishing to take part could bring their own ‘snappers’ and/or secateurs.
