14 convictions

FOURTEEN people were convicted for growing cannabis in Londonderry courts over the past five years.

It’s the lowest amount of convictions in any court division apart from Craigavon and Lisburn.

Lord Morrow asked the Minister of Justice David Ford how many convictions were secured for cannabis cultivation.

The Minister stated: “Cannabis cultivation may be prosecuted under Section 6(2) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and//or Articles 3 and 9(1) of the Criminal Attempts and Conspiracy (NI) Order 1983.”

He explained the information does not contain background information to aid identification of varying scales of cannabis cultivation and is collated on the principal offence rule; only the most serious offence for which an offender is convicted is included.
