21 taken to court for litteringcity streets

Twenty-one people were prosecuted for littering in Londonderry in 2013/14, but that was the only year in the last three during which there were any such pursuits through the courts.

Environment Minister Mark H. Durkan explained that fixed penalty notices are used far more often to deal with litter louts.

“Councils also deal with litter offenders by issuing fixed penalty notices as an alternative to seeking prosecution through the courts,” he explained. “Over the past three financial years 12,338 fixed penalty notices were issued by councils for littering offences,” he said.
