Portadown man Ashley Forbes has been chosen chairman of the local Unionist Centenary Committee, with Lord Mayor Darryn Causby conducting the election at the annual meeting.
Mr Forbes said, “We have lots of plans ahead for events concerning our Unionist history taking place in Portadown in the future, the next one being Ulster Day.
“In marking ‘Ulster Day’ 2015, the Portadown UCC seeks to raise the profile of this date in order to emphasise the historic legacy of the Covenant and the integrity of Ulster and her peoples’ identity.
“In the decades following the creation of Northern Ireland the significance of ‘Ulster Day’, 28th September 1912, when Ulster’s Solemn League and Covenant was signed.
“The Covenant signing, rather than the Act of Parliament in 1921, was viewed as the pivotal step in the foundation of Northern Ireland. In 1962, the 50th anniversary was celebrated with a rally at Balmoral.”
