Ballycarry war memorial plans near final stage

The monthly meeting of the association was updated on the plan, which has been ongoing now for several years.

Vice-chairman Rev Dr John Nelson informed members that the stone was now with a local stonemason, and preparation work has now begun.

In conjunction with Larne Borough Council, planning permission has been obtained for the memorial on the village amenity green.

It is expected that the memorial will be one of the last relating to the First and Second World Wars to be unveiled in Northern Ireland.

However, the association is trying to obtain information about a mystery serviceman from the area.

Chairman Dr David Hume has appealed for information on a John McCready, who died on active service in 1941, according to a gravestone inscription in the Templecorran cemetery.

“This is a name which is outstanding as John McCready has not been mentioned to us over the years of our Festival of Remembrance and we are keen to have more information about him,” Dr Hume said.

Meanwhile, further details of the progress of the war memorial will be revealed at the annual Festival of Remembrance in the village, which takes place on Friday, November 11, at 7.45pm.

The venue this year will be the Old Presbyterian Church and everyone is welcome to attend.
