I was lucky enough to be invited along to Donaghmore for the second night in a two-week run of the 80’s musical masterpiece and was transported back to the days of big hair, big rock tunes and even bigger superstar egos.

From start to finish, the Bardic cast - with star appearances from the better known faces of Declan McGrath, Brian Mills and Stuart Richardson, as well as younger members deserving of mention in the form of Kathryn O’Neill, Chloe McGrath and Deaglan Arthurs - brought the story of 80’s LA to life in a blast of colour and energy.

Rock of Ages, based on the 2012 film starring Tom Cruise, is set to the budding romance between small-town wannabe actress Sherrie (Kathryn O’Neill) and city boy/rockstar Drew (the first class Conor Begley), with stellar musical performances from the on-stage band, who would give Guns ‘n’ Roses, Whitesnake or Journey a real run for their money.

If like me, you love the cheesy music and fashion that defined the 80’s, you will LOVE the Bardic’s Rock of Ages as it’s a real high-energy, multi-coloured, feel-good show that will brighten your day.

And, even if such crimes against style and sound aren’t necessarily your cup of tea, if you fancy a trip to sample some of the best local theatre in Northern Ireland, the Bardic - and their artistic director Stephanie Faloon - have genuinely come up with a winning formula yet again.

The Bardic Theatre Box Office can be reached online at www.bardictheatre.com or 028 8776 1859. Rock of Ages runs until February 13.
