Borough could soon play host to ‘parkrun’

Council officers are to investigate the possibility of holding regular ‘parkrun’ events in the borough.

Parkruns are free, organised, timed 5km runs which take place on a weekly basis in local parks across the UK.

At the council’s Leisure Committee meeting on January 6, Cllr Thomas Hogg revealed that he had taken part in a recent parkrun in Co Fermanagh and pointed to the success of the regular parkruns in neighbouring council areas such as Belfast and Carrickfergus.

The DUP man said that parkruns are popular all over the world and suggested that the council should actively encourage a parkrun in one of the borough’s parks.

The council’s Director of Leisure Services, Hugh Kelly gave an assurance that officers would research the issue and bring a report back to a future committee meeting.

“We are always looking for more ways to bring people into our parks,” he said.
