Almac opening in Singapore

Pharmaceutical development company Almac has opened regional hubs in Singapore and Japan to help service increasing demand for its services in the Asian market.

The new offices will enable the Craigavon-headquartered company to expand its unique clinical services and technology capabilities with on-the-ground leadership as well as technical, project and operational resources in Asia.

Its Asian business is mainly focussed on carrying out clinical trials in the area as well as managing global trials.

Staff from Craigavon will be based at the new Asian facilities to apply insights gained from Almac’s experience managing more than 10,000 trials around the world to design, implement and manage drug supply strategies and efficient technology solutions.

The company has also announced that it will open a new secondary packaging facility in Singapore by the end of 2014 to better enable just-in-time supply management and support drug pooling strategies, which further optimise the supply chain, minimise wastage and reduce costs.

The news is being announced to coincide with the BioPharma Asia Convention in Singapore - Asia’s largest and most strategic biopharmaceutical event - being attended by almost 3,000 key stakeholders and decision makers from across the globe this week, including Almac representatives.

Almac’s CEO Alan Armstrong said: “Although we have expanded outside Europe previously, with four facilities across the US, setting up new hubs in Singapore and Japan is a significant step forward for Almac in expanding our business in the Asia Pacific region.

“With 15 percent of all clinical trials conducted in Asia, it’s imperative that we provide localised service and support to the sponsors of these trials.

“We’ve long managed clinical trials on a global basis, but there’s now sufficient critical mass that requires we establish dedicated resources in the region. I’m pleased that our international expertise and global capabilities are now even more accessible to sponsors in this critically-important part of the world, and look forward to opening our new packaging facility later this year.”

Around 95% of Almac’s business comes from outside the UK. Its services are seen as unique by customers around the world helping navigate the complexities from trial start-up through to supply and patient management. Providing expert and responsive service is essential for all trials, but particularly those managed from or within Asia.
