CAP trains extra debt staff

As many still feel the financial squeeze, the Lisburn branch of a debt counselling charity is training extra staff to help spread the good news about the free ‘open to all’ help they can provide to those in need.

Consequently Kenny Smyth a volunteer, has just returned from CAP HQ in Bradford where he has been trained as a Community Links Co-ordinator.

This is an important role where he will concentrate in contacting those in the community who can refer people in need to CAP.

The centre, supported by twelve local churches, was opened last year and now has fourteen volunteers to help spread CAP’s uniquely in depth, caring and face-to-face service.

Typically most clients get in touch after personal recommendation while others are referred by family centres, housing associations and council offices.

Clients’ creditors are contacted by CAP, a workable budget is set for the household and the charity continues to give support and encouragement until the client is debt free.

Centre Manager for Lisburn Paul Bailie said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming Community Links Co-ordinatot Kenny Smyth onto the team at this crucial time.

“Whilst many have used our service there are many more that need to know about our free service and it will be Kenny’s job to help spread the word.

“The most common cause of debt is a change in circumstance, for example job loss, relationship breakdown, accident or illness in the family.”
