Care worker on sex charges

A preliminary enquiry involving a Co Antrim care worker who allegedly engaged in sexual acts with a person in his care has been put back for two weeks, a court has heard.

Gary McGrath-Hayes (42), of Mountview Drive, Ballybogey, appeared at North Antrim Magistrates’ Court in Coleraine on Thursday morning.

He is charged with two counts of intentionally and sexually touching a person with a mental disorder on April 30 last year.

He is also charged with intentionally touching the alleged victim - who cannot be named to protect their identity - in a sexual manner involving penetration on the same date.

During the short hearing, a defence solicitor asked the court for the case to be put back for two weeks to give him time to review evidence and decide how to proceed.

District Judge, Liam McNally, told the defendant he was to appear back at North Antrim Magistrates’ Court on May 29.
