Carol singers to perform around Town

THE Mayor of Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council, Cllr Phelim Gildernew, joined members of the ‘Coalisland Cares’ group and local churches for a carol singing practise, in preparation for taking some ‘peace and goodwill’ to the streets of Coalisland next week.

Holding a lantern, the Mayor sang ‘O Come all Ye Faithful’ and other well known carols with the community carollers in Brackaville Parish Hall, before wishing everyone a ‘Happy Christmas.’

The carollers were accompanied by father and daughter duo Brian and Kelda McKay playing their accordions.

Paddy Linden, Chairperson of ‘Coalisland Cares’, hopes that a new annual tradition of community carol singing around local estates can be started, or perhaps restarted in Coalisland, to promote festive community spirit.

Local Church of Ireland Rector, Revd Andrew Rawding, is also keen to resurrect an activity that some of his older parishioners have talked about happening in the past, forty or more years ago. As accordion player Brian McKay pointed out: ‘Carol singing is community singing - you don’t have to be a great singer, just come and join in.’

The carol singers will be meeting at 6.30pm on Monday 17th December at the Parochial Hall in Coalisland before singing around nearby estates, then again at 6.30pm on Wednesday 19th December at Brackaville Parish Hall to sing around nearby estates. All are welcome to join the community carollers - singing ability is less important than some peace, goodwill and lots of community spirit.
