Castleroe car breaker given suspended sentence for illegal waste offences

A Castleroe car breaker was given a three month sentence, suspended for two years, at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Trevor Corscadden (54) of Castleroe Road, Castleroe, Coleraine, pleaded guilty to one charge of keeping controlled waste and one charge of depositing controlled waste.

In June 2014, officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency visited his car breaker yard at 91-91a Castleroe Road, and found an active car breaker with around 200 end of life vehicles on site.

All the vehicles that were checked had not been de-polluted, making them a hazardous waste. Officers were unable to find any sign of any measures to prevent environmental damage - no impermeable areas (to prevent run off into the surrounding ground), battery boxes or tanks to safely store fluids.
