City firm's new uniform unveiled

Uniform specialists Hunter Apparel were responsible for producing the up to date gear, securing a €2 million contract in the process.

Traditionally, the Irish Post Office uniforms had a distinct military style edge with peaked caps, shirts and ties, more akin to that of the Garda Siochana than postal workers.

But, now the work clothes boasts cargo trousers with pockets on the legs, gilets, baseball caps, woollen beanie hats and all-weather gear in shades of blue with green trims.

When the state run Post & Telegraph department split into Telecom ireann and An Post back in 1984 there was a modest change in style and in 1987 renowned Irish designer Paul Costelloe softened the military style line of the uniform, but retained the distinctive navy trousers with a blue shirt and tie.

Those An Post employees who road-tested the gear during the recent cold weather have approved the new work wear saying it was comfortable with the layers of clothing making it light but very warm. Practicality, weight and the ability to machine wash the uniform were all factors in the design brief used by Hunter Apparel.
