College pupils let down in play cancellation

A group of Portadown College drama students had their expectations of a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious night blown away after a performance of Mary Poppins was unexpectedly cancelled.

The Year 13 pupils and four teachers had travelled to Dublin on Tuesday for the West End show but were turned away at the door of the Bord Gais Energy Theatre.

It is believed that some of the cast of the Disney and Cameron Mackintosh production were unable to get back from London in time for the performance.

English and drama teacher Pauline Curry said that not only were students and staff “hugely disappointed” but the theatre visit was part of an assessment for the AS drama students, with pupils having researched the show in advance.

She added, “Our pupils are older but there were some six and seven-year-olds who turned up in costume and they were in tears.

“We have been offered a refund or an alternative date but that could be difficult to organise. I am also making enquiries about a refund for the bus which cost £300. One pupil was celebrating his 18th birthday, so it was a real let-down.”
