Council bids farewell to Alderman Craig

PARTIES from right across the Council Chamber paid tribute to Alderman Jonathan Craig who has resigned from the Council with effect from the end of the month.

Speaking at the monthly Council Meeting on Tuesday night, the Mayor, Alderman William Leathem said, “Since Jonathan and I first ran for Council together in 2001 I have had the privilege of working with a fine colleague and dear friend. He has worked tirelessly for communities right across the City and his role in the Council over the past 11 years has been pivotal.

“As well as his community and political work, Jonathan’s commitment to his charity work is unfaltering. I would like to recognise his work for many worthy causes but especially to Autism NI, a charity close to his heart and which was his chosen charity during his Mayoral Term in 2005/06.

“While this may be the closing of a chapter in Lisburn City Council, it is by no means the end of Jonathan’s association with us, I have no doubt that as an MLA for this City he will continue to work and campaign for the rights of everybody and we look forward to continuing a close working relationship with him in the future,” said the Mayor.

DUP colleague Alderman Paul Porter wished Mr Craig well and specifically highlighted his achievements as Mayor including introducing school visits to the Council offices as well as the Mayor’s award for volunteers.

SDLP Councillor Pat Catney wished Mr Craig all the best and Sinn Fein councillor Arder Carson said he had strong admiration for Mr Craig in “terms of his commitments to public service”.

Alliance Councillor Brian Dornan also wished Mr Craig the best in his future and praised the “civil service he has done for the city of Lisburn”.
