Council lends support to sports charity

LARNE Council has agreed to award £1,000 to a charity that supports talented young athletes across Northern Ireland.

The Mary Peters Trust distributed more than £60,000 to over 200 young people in 2010, including three athletes from Larne - Matthew Hall, Lewis Mitchell and Jordan Mitchell.

The council feels that the work of the Trust complements that of its own sports development programme, in terms of offering financial assistance to help rising young sporting talent.

Back in 2008, the local authority contributed £1,000 to the Trust.

But this time, the council decided to award a smaller amount of £500 for the financial year 2011/12, and a further £500 in 2012/13.

This figure will be reviews annually and the contributions will be taken from the sports development grant budget.
