Councillors push to tackle village issues

Mark Baxter has been working to have the war memorial cleaned up while Philip Moutray wants to see broken paving slabs replaced.

Mr Baxter commented: “Having been contacted by a local resident in Waringstown about the clarity of two of the names on the war memorial and how the gold leaf lettering had been compromised I visited the site and had a look for myself.

“The first two names of local men who died in the Great War, Frank Andrews and John Brown, are certainly obscured. I’m delighted to report that after working on the issue that all the lettering on the face of the memorial will be re-done in the next two weeks.

“As we reflect on the 100th anniversary of the beginning of WWI, I felt this issue is very important. As a council we are working on series of events to mark this historic and important year after a motion was brought forward by my colleague Carla Lockhart to plant poppies at various locations throughout the borough and to set up a committee to look at further events aswell.

“As we remember and reflect this incoming year about all those who paid the ultimate sacrafice all those years ago I believe its imperative that all our memorials are kept in pristine condition and am delighted that Waringstown will have this carried out”

Of the paving slabs Councillor Philip Moutray said: “These broken slabs urgently need replaced by Roads Service. As a result of it having been raised with me I have contacted Roads Service and asked them to fix the problem immediately before someone is seriously injured.”

“Waringstown is a rural village with residents taking great pride in the upkeep of the area. This unfortunately is an eyesore and deters from the tidy, well kept Main Street. Additionally my fear is that a pedestrian could trip over the slabs and injure themselves. It is time for Roads Service to address this problem because unfortunately these slabs have been broken for quite some time.”
