Proud grandparents Arthur and Nora Spollen were glued to the TV last Friday night as their granddaughter performed in RTE’s ever-popular ‘The Late Late Toy Show’.
Lauren Carroll (11), the daughter of Claire Carroll (nee Spollen), sang ‘Let it Go’ from the hit Disney musical ‘Frozen’, without any hint of nerves despite being watched by a record TV audience of 1.4 million.
Lauren, who lives in Co Meath, was selected from hundreds of hopefuls after making it through to the live auditions of the show, which is considered an ‘institution’ in Irish broadcasting.
Earlier this year, she took second place in Britain’s Got Talent in Belfast, winning the ‘yes’ votes of all four judges and a standing ovation from the audience.
Claire said, “Her granddad Arthur went behind the scenes with her at Britain’s Got Talent and met Ant and Dec and the show’s producer.”
This time, her grandparents watched from their Derrylettiff Road home as Lauren’s voice soared and so did she, literally, as she was hoisted aloft in the role of ‘Flying Elsa’.
Said Claire, “She absolutely loved being on The Late Late Toy Show. Ryan Tubridy is lovely and she was treated so well. All the children who performed were put up in Bewley’s Hotel after the show.”
Despite a 12-hour day on Friday, Lauren still had enough energy to do a piano exam the following day and on Sunday, travel to Athlone to record an upcoming RTE show.
Claire, a former pupil of Drumcree College, has no idea where her daughter’s talent come from. She said, “No-one on my side or my husband’s side of the family can sing or play an instrument.”
Lauren, who was back at her school desk on Monday, hopes to be a director and run her own theatre.
