Leslie Gregg (29) from Aughrim Road admitted charges of possessing on January 25 and attempting to possess the drug between December 10 and 18 last year.

A prosecuting lawyer told Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Wednesday that on December 11 last year a parcel of herbal cannabis was seized in the post and on December 18 a second parcel was seized.

Counsel said the parcels had the defendant’s name and address and contained approximately 56 grammes of cannabis. He said police carried out a search at the defendant’s home and found a joint and approximately 38 grams of cannabis at the property.

The lawyer said Gregg made a full admission to the offences and told police he had obtained the drug over Snapchat and stated it was for his own personal use.

He added that Gregg had received a caution in 2015.

Defence lawyer Michael Forde said the defendant had been recently married and worked as a care worker.

Mr Forde asked the court to consider a character reference in respect of the defendant from his local church. He said Gregg had made a full admission to the police and asked the court to take this into account when sentencing.

District Judge Paul Keown ordered Gregg to pay an offender’s levy of £15 and made an order for the destruction of the drugs.
