Belfast City Council contractors are set to carry out further cleaning work after graffiti was sprayed over the Irish wording on four bi-lingual street signs in the Downview Park West area of north Belfast over recent days.

In a statement issued to the Newtownabbey Times today (Monday), a Belfast City Council spokesperson said: “We have had one report of vandalism to dual language street signs last week at Downview Park West where four signs had graffiti spray painted onto the Irish wording.

"All four signs were cleaned by residents before the council’s contractor attended the site.

“One of the signs is damaged and will be replaced, while one other sign will have further cleaning work carried out by the council’s contractor.”

The spokesperson confirmed that it cost “approximately £600” to erect all four signs when they were new, adding that it would cost “approximately £150” to repair the damage caused.
