Police officers are dealing with an ongoing security alert in Larne.

During building work in the vicinity of Circular Road, Larne this morning, Monday, August 24, what is believed to be a historic piece of munition – a WWI grenade – was discovered.

Inspector Riddell said: “Police are working to clear the area at this time.

“The road is closed from Circular Road Roundabout through to the Curran Road.

“Larne bound trains have also been stopped from entering Larne train station.

“I appreciate this will cause disruption in the area for those impacted, however, keeping people safe is of paramount importance and we will not take any risks.

“In the meantime, I want to thank those affected for their patience as we work to clear the area.”
