Removal of interface barrier in NI town is welcomed

A peace line at an interface in an NI town is to be removed - 23 years after the Good Friday Agreement was signed.

The interface barrier which had separated nationalist and loyalist communities in Lurgan, Co Armagh for decades, is to be taken down after consultation with residents.

The move to dismantle the fence at Margretta Park has been welcomed by the Alliance Party.

The large fence, with a lockable gate currently in place, will be removed and replaced with a lower staggered black fence along with additional lighting and planting of greenery.

Alliance Councillor Peter Lavery said: “This is a positive news story for Lurgan and I would like to thank the residents for showing leadership on this issue.

“Politicians, communities and residents need to continue to work together to build a shared society where everyone can feel safe without the need for these interface structures.”

He added: “I think everyone wants to live in a community that is free from barriers, both physical and mental, so they can just get on with living their lives.

“The work is set to begin on Monday 8th of March and is scheduled to last approximately four weeks.”
