Was brandishing a knife during row

When police went to a street in Portadown they saw a man brandishing a knife in an argument with a woman.

He was Jaoa Dos Santos (34), George Street, Portadown, and he admitted common assault and possession of an offensive weapon on October 21 last year.

The defendant appeared via videolink from Maghaberry prison last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

A prosecutor said that police received a report of a man arguing with a female in Thomas Street and he was holding a knife. When police approached him he put the knife down and ran away.

The injured party, the partner of the defendant, said he had chased her out of the house and onto the street threatening her with the knife.

Dos Santos presented himself at Lurgan police station and was arrested. He made full admissions. Defence barrister Conor Lunny said his client had been in custody for two months. “It was a domestic argument that spiralled out of control,” said Mr Lunny.

District Judge Rosie Watters imposed a concurrent four month prison term on each of the two charges.
