Deaths of two pillars of the Ballycastle community

SDLP MLA for North Antrim Declan O'Loan said that Ballycastle has lost two of the pillars of its community in one week, in the deaths of Tessie Bakewell and Marian Black.

Marian Black was the mother of SDLP Councillor Catherine McCambridge.

Declan O'Loan said: "The congregations which packed St Patrick's and St Brigid's Church in Ballycastle on Saturday and Sunday were evidence in themselves of the high regard in which Tessie and Marian were held. They had much in common. They had strong warm personalities and earned the affection and regard of so many people. Both of them spent many years as Primary School teachers and were very dedicated to their schools and to the wider community.

“They both had large families and a very wide extended family in the neighbourhood. Those families will miss them very much, but will look back on lives richly and generously lived. I extend my sympathies to the entire family circles and in particular to my colleague Catherine.

Councillors Madeline Black and Orla Black also extended their sympathy to their friend and colleague on Moyle District Council, and to the entire Bakewell and Black families."
