Derryhirk bounce back

Derryhirk 2 Drumcashlone 1

DERRYHIRK bounced back from their defeat in the first round of the Junior Cup with a wonderful 2-1 victory over Drumcashlone in the Mid-Ulster Shield.

Derryhirk started slowly but started to get in the game with good play from Liam McCrory and Keith Totten on the left hand side.

It was from that side that Derryhirk created their first real chance.

Totten crossed the ball to the back post and Niall Goeghan headed in back across the box, where John McLaughlin went for the bicycle kick, sending the ball wide.

The breakthrough came just before the end of the first half.

A through ball from Ronan McGee found Conor McKavanagh, who crossed it across the box to Niall Geoghan to slot it into the bottom corner of the net, putting the Hirk one up.

The second half saw Derryhirk with most of the possession but they could not convert their chances.

Gareth Magee and Daryl McAlernon went close.

But it was the hard work of John Mc Laughlin who put the Drumcashlone keeper under pressure and he blocked down his kick and the ball fell to Conor McKavanagh for the easiest of finishes.

Derryhirk should of made it 3-0 minutes later when a through ball from Gareth Magee found Ronan Magee, but his effort was cleared off the line.

Against the run of play Drumcashlone scored a long-range goal but Derryhirk held onto the lead.
