Dervock’s heroes of Trafalgar remembered

Recently local man Peter Thompson organised an event to spread the word about the historical connections.

“It was and is a well known fact to the people of Dervock that the Adair Memorial Hall was built by Samuel Allen in memory of his two parents’ families - the Allens and the Adairs. The windows he installed in 1936 depict the history of those families. One depicts the Battle of Trafalgar with Captain Adair, a relation, at the Battle.

“He is seen in the window on board HMS Victory, close to Lord Nelson and we believe this to be the only memorial on this island not only to Lord Nelson but to Captain Adair of the Royal Marines.”

Peter continued: “The event was a magnificent success and would not have been possible without help and co-operation from many people.” He thanked Keith Beattie from Ballymoney Museum, Dick Glasgow and friends, George Logan and the troop from Living History Ireland, Kate Connolly, the ladies who not only provided a beautiful tea but also dressed in 18th century style to add to the event. Thannks also to Richard McConaghie (drum), Tony Small (flute), Even Inch (flag), Samuel and Sylvia McCaughan, Rev John and Eleanor Anderson, the Mill Team Room whose staff dressed in period costume.

“Last but by no means least the people of Dervock who supported the event, it was your kind comments of support which gives me inspiration for future events.”

All those taking part volunteered their services to help raise monies for the Allen and Adair Memorial Hall Restoration Fund. “This historic hall houses the only memorial to Lord Nelson and Captain Adair on this island and we believe it is worth preserving,” he added.
