After he had driven through a roundabout into a ditch, a 53-year-old man found himself trapped in his car and had to call the police for help.
Brian Gordon Williamson of Kernan Hill Manor, Portadown, was fined £150 last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for driving without due care and attention on October 23 last year.
He was also given three points and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.
The court heard that at 2.45am on the Armagh Road, Portadown, the defendant reported to police that he had left the road.
He was trapped in his vehicle in a ditch surrounded by trees.
He had gone straight through a roundabout, down a small ditch, and collided with a tree.
A small advertising sign on the roundabout was damaged.
Williamson was taken to Craigavon hospital but did not have any serious injuries.
He said he had an argument with his girlfriend and was not concentrating.
When interviewed later he said the accident was caused by the road conditions and the comment he made at the scene was taken out of context.
A solicitor representing Williamson said he had been momentarily inattentive and that had caused the accident.
