Drumavoley Road bridge remains closed following flash flooding

TransportNI say they reacted quickly to flash flooding in the Ballycastle area on Sunday (5 July) following prolonged periods of intense thundery showers during the afternoon.

The Department along with staff from DARD Rivers Agency distributed around 150 sandbags in Ballycastle town and surrounding area.

TransportNI Divisional Road Manager Deidre Mackle said: “Domestic property was largely unaffected, however, there were reports of a domestic garage flooded at Ballyportery Road, Loughgiel. A bridge on the C107 Drumavoley Road, Ballycastle sustained structural damage resulting in a road closure”.

“Follow-up work continued throughout Sunday and Monday.

“TransportNI engineers have now made a full assessment of the bridge and are planning for urgent structural repairs to make the bridge safe and allow the road to be re-opened as soon as possible”.

Local diversions are in place.

Approximately 150 sandbags in total were distributed to the following locations in Ballycastle: Glenshesk Road, Fairview Heights, Leyland Road, Everglades,Fairhill Street, Fairhill Street Car Park, Strand View, North Street, Bayview Car Park, Hillside Road. And Ballyportery Road, Loughgiel.
