Exposed himself to two women

A 30-year-old man exposed himself and made indecent comments to two women, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Friday.

He was Edgar Purvens, whose address at the time of the offence was Selshion Drive, Portadown, but now has an address at Beech Park.

At a previous court he admitted that on August 15 he intentionally exposed his genitals intending that someone would see them and be caused alarm or distress.

The case had been adjourned for a pre-sentence report.

However, the court last Friday was told that a report was not available because Purvens had been incarcerated for a period of time and when he was released probation did not have time to prepare a report. District Judge, Mrs Bernie Kelly, said she wanted to hear the facts of the case.

A public prosecutor said that on August 15 two females, who were young adults, reported to police that the defendant had exposed himself.

She added that Purvens had pulled down his trousers, waved an intimate part of his body and made lewd comments.

When interviewed he said he had been expressing annoyance with the people in the house opposite.

The victims had nothing to do with the house opposite to Purvens.

A defence solicitor said they were the only foreign national family in this area and had received threats and their windows smashed.

He added that Purvens, while intoxicated, thought they were under threat and someone was looking through their windows.

The defendant’s solicitor said his client would say there was no sexual motive.

Judge Kelly said there was a sexual motive. “There was a complete lack of respect for any female kind.”

But she added that because there had been no time to prepare a report she was prepared to put the case back for a pre-sentence report.

Judge Kelly said that the court would not approve of this sort of behaviour in any shape, form or fashion and if the victims had been under 18 the defendant would have been put on the Sex Offenders Register and banned from having contact with children.

She adjourned the case until November 27 so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.
