Fake policeman attempts to rob premises in West Street

A man wearing a police uniform attempted to rob premises in Portadown yesterday.

At approximately 10.10am two males entered the shop premises.

The second male, who was carrying what was believed to be a firearm, was wearing black Adidas tracksuit bottoms with a stripe on them and a waterproof two tone black/charcoal grey jacket. Both were aged in their 20s.

On entering the shop the person purporting to be a police officer tried to push one of the assistants into a storeroom. The second man jumped over the counter and wrestled with another assistant.

Both men left the premises empty handed and got into a blue Toyota Avensis car, JHZ 1307. There may have been a third man in the car.

This car was later found abandoned at approximately 11.30am in Fairgreen car park.

Detective Inspector Keith Gawley said, “I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have seen the vehicle travelling between West Street and where it was abandoned in Fairgreen car park to contact detectives at Lurgan Police station on the non-emergency number 101. Police would also like to hear from anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in and around Fairgreen carpark before 11.30am or shortly afterwards to also contact Police. If someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
