Farmers lobby on EU SinglePayment

Co Antrim farmers voiced concerns to DARD officials about the future of the EU Single Farm Payment at a meeting organised by Sinn Féin agriculture spokesperson Oliver McMullan in Ballymena recently.

MEP Martina Anderson also attended the meeting on public consultation of the payment structure.

East Antrim MLA Mr McMullan said: “The farming industry and rural economy are important to the entire economy of the north, so these meetings are crucial in defending the industry against cuts and market conditions.

“The farmers have an opportunity to help shape of the future of the Single Farm Payments. It is important that the minister hears them, so if they have any further points they should submit them into the Department by letter.”

Mr McMullan added: “Last year’s extreme weather caused financial stress, and we must protect the livelihood of our local farmers.”
