Fly-tippers causing dismay

Upper Bann Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson has been contacted by constituents in the village who have growing concerns about the amount of rubbish that has been dumped in the town in recent weeks.

Councillor Dobson said: “I was contacted by constituents living on the Banbridge Road, Waringstown. One resident noticed a large jeep with a trailer behind pull in at the top of the hill, just before the New Line.

“He thought they had stopped and were simply adjusting furniture that had been displaced in the trailer.To his dismay he noticed not long after that they had dumped old furniture, sun lounger frame and several other items. A mile up the road someone has also dumped a dishwasher and washing machine at the on the Annaghanoon Road.

“The residents, like myself, are furious that someone would do this and are understandably fed up looking at unsightly rubbish which has been left strewn at the side of the roads. This latest incident is only the latest in a long catalogue of increasing incidents and residents are quite rightly becoming frustrated.

“This has been increasingly occurring in rural areas, I would urge members of the public to be vigilant.”

Mrs Dobson has previously commented on this issue in the Craigavon Council Environmental Services Committee: “Fly-tipping costs the council a considerable amount of money each year. Constantly cleaning up rubbish left behind at the side of roads drains the Council resources.”

She concluded: “I have reported all the incidents which have been brought to my attention and would encourage the public to be vigilant and if possible report details including vehicle type and registration number of any potential fly-tippers to the Council or a local Councillor or MLA.”
