Going the Extra Mile makes big splash

a REALLY big splash was made when a special fundraising effort to support the Children’s Heartbeat Trust and Larne Swimming Club was staged in Larne Leisure Centre.

The Going the Extra Mile relay event involved both junior and senior swimmers as well as teams of parents, guardians, lifeguards and coaches.

Teams had to swim 65 lengths of a 25m pool in order to complete the mile (1,609.344metres). In all, not just one but over six miles were achieved by the swimmers.

The adult relay event had teams of six each with a Heartbeat Trust T-shirt. Although they weren’t required to complete a mile, each team member had to complete two lengths of the pool wearing their T-shirt. The exchanging of the wet t-shirt from one team member to the next was entertaining for the spectators and it wasn’t made any easier by swimmers and colleagues on poolside armed with water pistols and throwing in floatable obstacles.

Larne Mayor, Councillor Bobby McKee gave his support to the event by wishing the swimmers all the best.

It proved a very successful event, with various great prizes won through relay events and a raffle on the day. Thanks are extended to sponsors and supporters Style’n’Sport, Ballymena; Troggs, Portrush, Shloer and Larne-based businesses Blue Chicago Grill House, Cafe Mallo, Dominos Pizza, Omniplex Cinemas, Subway, KFC, The Prom Cafe, Mauds and Larne Leisure Centre.
