Good Samaritan’s parking ticket fine is overturned

As reported in the Larne Times, the unnamed Glynn man was fined for failing to pay and display at the car park after going to the assistance of an elderly man, who had collapsed and sustained injury on the footpath.

Mr Beggs felt the man had been unjustly penalised, and asked Northern Division manager Deirdre Mackle to intervene and overturn the fine.

And Roads Service’s Parking Enforcement Processing Unit, based in Omagh, has written to the man stating: “After representations from Roy Beggs MLA, I am pleased to inform you that on this occasion the representations have been accepted and I have cancelled the penalty charge notice.”

Mr Beggs said he was “glad that common sense has prevailed” and added: “After media coverage of this issue, another person who witnessed the whole situation and in fact helped administer first aid to the elderly gentleman who had slipped and fallen on the pavement, came into my office and was able to confirm what had happened. Through a good Samaritan intervention, a parking ticket had inadvertently not been purchased and displayed in this case.

“My office in Larne was able to forward this further corroborative evidence to Roads Service and I am delighted that they have accepted the truth of the story and waived the fine. It is always nice to have a happy end to a story and prove that after all one good deed deserves another.”
