Lumps of hair were pulled out of the head of a woman who was also punched and kicked on the head, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Friday.

Valdis Grundizs (48), Atkinson Avenue, Portadown, appeared by way of videolink from Maghaberry prison.

He admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm on February 13 this year. For this offence he was sentenced to five months in prison.

Two suspended sentences of two months and three months were put into operation to run concurrently with each other but consecutively to the five month term.

This meant that Grundizs was sentenced to a total of eight months in custody.

The court heard that on February 13 in the early hours of the morning police were tasked to an address where the injured party said she had been assaulted by her partner.

On February 21 the defendant was interviewed and denied assaulting his partner saying he had been in Dublin at the time. He said she was making false allegations.

Mr Richard Monteith, representing the defendant, said there was a volatile relationship between the defendant and the injured party with alcohol on both sides a major issue. He added the injured party took ten hours to report the matter to the police.

Mr Monteith said the constable who saw the injuries also saw the injured party was heavily intoxicated as well.
