DUP MLA Sydney Anderson has encouraged school leavers and first-time university students to avail of a new meningitis vaccination.
This vaccine will also start to be made available to all 14 to 18 year olds through the school immunisation programme, plus GPs from January 2016.
“I fully welcome the introduction of this new vaccine in Northern Ireland,” he said. “Although our public finances are currently experiencing significant strain it is great to see that this vaccination is being offered to young people who are leaving school and also those up to the age of twenty-five who are starting university for the first time in the autumn.
“Older teenagers and students beginning university normally mix with large groups of people, especially if they stay away from home and this leaves them more exposed to a range of various types of diseases and infections.
“For better assurance of protection I would encourage school-leavers to arrange to get this new vaccine through their GP before the start of the university term.
“It is also imperative that all in society are aware of the signs and symptoms.”
