Hospice favour

WHEN Jonathan Maitland and Sharon McCann got married last August in the idyllic setting of Loch Lomond, local charity - Northern Ireland Hospice was very much at the heart of the celebrations.

The couple decided to purchase Hospice’s personalised wedding favours with pin badges in memory of Jonathan’s Grandmother. Not only was she one of the first patients cared for by Northern Ireland Hospice in the 1980’s, but her Hospice community nurse was a local man called Mark Donald. Sadly she passed away in August 1984. Mark subsequently emigrated to Australia. However, the family were so overwhelmed by the unique care given to her that Jonathan’s Mum, Irene joined a local fundraising group in October 1984 and she’s been a passionate Hospice supporter ever since. To date over £300,000 has been raised locally.

Jonathan said: “From my personal experience when Gran was ill, I know that Northern Ireland Hospice did great work looking after her in her final days, and it meant a lot to me to make a donation in her memory. I know from the photos of the guests wearing their pin badges that this meant more to them than the traditional almonds or sweets.”
