Housing Executive delay?

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said that the fact that the Housing Executive are continuing to delay the rollout of double glazing installations as the winter starts to take hold is a disgrace.

This is the case despite the fact that double glazing contractors have been appointed.

He said: “The Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland and the Housing Executive continue to astound everyone with their inexcusable delays to this crucial work. There are still many people living in social housing without double glazing and many of those houses would have been upgraded had it not been for the Minister’s political interference.

“In an answer to a question I tabled the Minister has now stated that no new double glazing schemes will be started before April and gives no indication of when they will start. This is totally unacceptable given the fact that the cold weather is starting to hit home and many people will have to pay more money to heat their homes than would be the case with double glazing installed.

“The Minister makes clear that these delays are due to the new appointment process for contractors that he overseen recently. It is blatant political interference and it is clearly impacting on housing executive tenants.

“There is no good reason why the Department could not pull their finger out and get construction workers back out on site in February to ensure that many households are not struggling to heat their homes in the months ahead.”
