Kennedy announces start of £255,000 schemes for Coleraine

Work will start on Monday, March 4 and will be carried out during off peak hours.

Regional Development Minister, Danny Kennedy said: “Roads Service has carefully programmed the works operations and traffic management arrangements in order to minimise any inconvenience to the public, however motorists should be aware that some delays may be expected and that additional time should be allowed when planning any journeys.”

In addition to the resurfacing works there are plans to upgrade the signalised junction at the Waterside gyratory in Coleraine by the introduction of a MOVA (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Activation). This busy junction at the ‘old bridge’ is not performing efficiently with queues and delays at peak times particularly in the mornings.

The Minister said: “The introduction of this MOVA system will provide an enhanced traffic response system which will ultimately lead to reduced queues and delays and improved journey times to and from Coleraine town centre.”

It is also proposed to introduce a PUFFIN type controlled pedestrian crossing on Castlerock Road at a location between the entrances to the Spar Shop and County Hall. There is significant pedestrian movement across Castlerock Road in this vicinity including vulnerable road users from the adjacent Hezlet Court Housing Association complex to the shops/post office at the garage.

This new type of pedestrian crossing was installed at the junction of Railway Road and Circular Road in Coleraine last year and has been well received by both pedestrians and drivers.

The off-peak works will commence on Sunday, February 24 with the scheme expected to be completed by Sunday, March 3.
