Sinn Féin Armagh Banbridge and Craigavon Councillor Catherine Seeley has welcomed the European Parliament decision to take action to combat so-called ‘legal highs’.
Miss Seeley, who is her party’s candidate for Upper Bann in the Westminster election, said so called legal highs are a scourge on our society which has resulted in the loss of lives, grief and misery for so many.
“The nature of the drugs and chemicals involved means that those behind their production hide behind the law by changing the formula only slightly meaning they cannot be banned with the speed that is required to save lives.”
Miss Seeley said, “It is therefore important that both local law makers and at European level, introduce effective measures to curb the distribution and production of so called legal highs.
“That’s why this week’s decision by the EU Parliaments Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs to work with the European Council on dealing with legal highs is so important.
“The important decisions taken in Europe this week will help protect our young people on our streets from the scourge of legal highs.”
