‘Let Rivers Agency oversee village plans’

LARNE Council has called for future planning applications relating to the Mullaghboy area to be referred to the Rivers Agency, after councillors expressed concerns about flooding.

Larne Lough councillor John Mathews submitted the motion at the latest meeting of the public services committee, informing members that there had been flooding on a regular basis at Higginsons Lane, Islandmagee.

A site meeting had taken place to see if anything could be done to alleviate the problem, attended by East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson and representatives from Larne Council and the Rivers Agency.

Cllr Mathews said: “We want to draw planners’ attention to this flooding and ask that any further planning applications for the Mullaghboy area be automatically referred to the Rivers Agency for consultation.”

Seconding the proposal, Cllr Bobby McKee (Larne Lough) said the problem seemed to be getting worse over the years in rural areas and needed to be examined.

Cllr Mathews said there could be other areas in the borough where the same protocol could potentially be used.
