Local play park revamp plans are revealed

The first phase of a two-year play area refurbishment programme is due to start in November, Ballymena councillors have been told.

A committee heard that the works, consisting of new equipment provision and replacement of ‘wet pour’ surfaces, will centre on play areas at Ballee, McNeill Park (Moorfields), Ahoghill Community Centre, Maine Park (Galgorm) Lamont Park (Ballymena) and Smyth Crescent (Portglenone).

Members were told, however, that a review of play areas undertaken last year concluded that sites in Kells and Connor (Condiere Avenue, Maybin Park and Glenaan Park) did not require any immediate works nor had any provision been made for additional play facilities in Kells and Connor within the current Capital programme.

It was reported, however, that five areas which had been identified for play area development in the 2014/15-2015/16 Capital Plan were Drumtara, Fisherwick, Knockan Road (Broughshane), Tullygarley and Newtowncrommelin.

Members heard that a site has been identified at Drumtara subject to planning permission and funding while at Fisherwick officers are waiting on confirmation from the community on their preference of two sites. The development of a new play area at Tullygarley is being considered within the proposed Community Centre refurb project; community consultation is required for Knockan Road; and planning permission has been obtained for an identified site at Newtowncrommelin.
