Magnificent nett 61 for Michael takes Ballycastle August Monthly Medal

The August Monthly Medal at Ballycastle Golf Club was staged on Sunday 9th August and Michael Campbell’s magnificent nett 61 left the rest of the field contesting the minor placings !

Michael started by dropping two shots in the first two holes but aided by a birdie at the 7th he completed the front nine in 4 over par.

On the back nine he stuck tenaciously to his task carding two over par. The resultant nett 61 gave him a 4 shot margin over 9 handicapper Damian Mc Sorley who produced a fine nett 65 which enabled him to claim the Division 1 section.

Martin Morgan appears to major in Monthly Medals because, as he did in the July Medal, he claimed the Division 2 section with a nett 66 on countback from Liam Mc Gonigle.

Darren Mc Clintock was the man to beat in Division 3.Playing off 22 Darren carded a nett 65 which was sufficient to give him a 3 shot margin over his nearest rival.

The best gross of the day went to Paul Casey,who playing off 5,completed his round in a one over par 72.

Although not in the prizes Brendan Mc Collum,in the course of returning a solid nett 68 playing off 7 , had a birdie 2 at the Par 3 tenth only to follow it up with an eagle 2 at the Par 4 eleventh!

Royal Portrush visitor Roderick Leitch claimed the honours in the Midweek Open Stableford on 12 August.

Playing off 15 Roderick kept any damage to a minimum and with the help of threebirdies returned two nines of 23 points giving him a total of 46 points.

Runner up playing off 7 was local stalwart Harry Sheehan who, standing on the Par 3 17th tee at a magnificent 4 under par, looked a sure bet to claim the top spot but an unfortunate slip up at the penultimate hole meant he had to settle for second place.
